Player Profile

While in the Army, Fitzpatrick participated in hockey, swimming and at Liverpool he was still doing gymnastics or just about anything "that appealed to the heart of an athlete." Harry first dreamt of following in his father's footsteps, who was the goalkeeper of Bootle, but after being tested at centre-half it became his position early on in his career. He developed into an outside-left of note and was more than happy to move from Luton Town to his hometown in 1907. Fitzpatrick netted the only goal of the game on his debut as the Reds beat Sunderland at Anfield on 12 October 1907 and scored again two weeks later, also at Anfield, when Sheffield Wednesday were beaten 3-0. Even though Fitzpatrick scored two goals in only four games for the first team he was not as prolific for the reserves where he spent the majority of his sole season. His main weakness was the gathering of the ball and his distribution that didn't serve the tactics of Liverpool that tried to "place the ball forward and on the ground." In December 1915 Liverpool's board received a letter asking for "comforts" for Fitzpatrick who was a prisoner of war. The club accepted that two parcels of groceries be purchased from Cooper's at about 10 / 6d each. One was sent right away, but the other one held back in case Fitzpatrick would need help later on.

Fitzpatrick was a prisoner of war in Germany until early 1918 when he was among thousands of prisoners who were allowed to go to the Netherlands that year, where they stayed until the end of the war. Fitzpatrick put his football expertize to good use and coached Zaanlandsche Voetbal Vereeniging from Zandaam in the Dutch league until he left by train on 17 November 1918, six days after the surrender of Germany. Fitzpatrick returned to Liverpool living at 19 Skerries Road. He worked as a letter press machine printer. He died in 1942.
