Rio is an exciting left-winger who was signed in September 2024 after being on the books of Chelsea who were disappointed in losing him and have reportedly prohibited Liverpool's youth scouts to attend their academy games. Rio has been described as a generational talent and his self confidence was evident when he was asked in October 2024 that if it were a dream scenario, how would he like to be remembered in football: "I think for me, we're all believing that I can win the Ballon d'Or.” Rio answered, “I want to be regarded as one of the best players to ever play football and yeah, be a legend in the game." During the 2024/25 season, Ngumoha impressed across various levels. He featured for both the U18s and U21s, displaying his versatility as a left-sided forward capable of playing across the front line. His performances in these matches highlighted his technical ability, flair, and understanding of the game, earning him recognition within the club's youth setup. Ngumoha's breakthrough came in January 2025 when he was handed his senior debut by manager Arne Slot in an FA Cup match against Accrington Stanley. At just 16 years old, he became the youngest Liverpool player to appear in the FA Cup, marking a historic moment in the club's rich history.
The 2025 pre-season saw Ngumoha continue to impress with a series of superb goals and assists. His performances cemented his place in the first-team squad, with many observers noting his maturity, composure and confidence on the ball. On 25 August 2025, Ngumoha made his Premier League debut against Newcastle United. Introduced as a late substitute, the 16-year-old kept his composure in the tenth minute of stoppage time, collecting the ball inside the penalty area before firing a right-footed shot beyond Nick Pope to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory. The goal made him Liverpool's youngest-ever goalscorer at 16 years and 361 days and the fourth-youngest scorer in Premier League history.
Slot primarily used Rio as a substitute or kept him on the bench for much of the season. The manager's reasoning was to carefully manage the teenager's workload, limiting his minutes to reduce the risk of muscle fatigue or injury while using him as an impact substitute against tiring defenders. The approach allowed Ngumoha to exploit spaces late in matches and showcase his exceptional pace and dribbling ability without the physical demands of starting Premier League fixtures week after week. Slot also stressed that earning a regular place in Liverpool's attack required consistent performances in training and a thorough understanding of the tactical demands of senior football. Rather than rushing his development, he preferred to build Ngumoha's game gradually, both physically and tactically. The cautious approach frustrated many Liverpool supporters, who believed the youngster's pace and directness could have provided the fresh impetus the team's attack often lacked. Whenever he was called upon, Ngumoha's close control, acceleration and confidence in one-on-one situations immediately caught the eye. Equally comfortable on either flank, he showed little hesitation in taking on experienced defenders and consistently looked to drive directly towards goal, giving Liverpool an attacking dimension that was often missing during the campaign.
Rio's arrival at Liverpool proved to be a contentious transfer, with Chelsea left disappointed at losing a player they had developed through their academy system. Under FA regulations, clubs are entitled to compensation for players under the age of 24 who move after rejecting a re-engagement offer, with fees either agreed between the two clubs or determined by a tribunal if no agreement can be reached. After discussions between Liverpool and Chelsea failed to produce an agreement, the matter was referred to a tribunal. The compensation fee was eventually settled in February 2026. Liverpool were ordered to pay an initial £2.8 million, with a further £4 million in performance-related add-ons linked to senior appearances, contract extensions and international honours. As part of the ruling, Chelsea also secured a 20 per cent sell-on clause, entitling them to a fifth of any future profit should Ngumoha be sold by Liverpool.
Rio continued to impress whenever called upon. His second goal for Liverpool was another memorable moment, as he set a club record by becoming the youngest league goalscorer at Anfield, aged 17 years and 225 days. He opened the scoring in the 36th minute against Fulham, giving Liverpool the lead with a composed finish in front of the Kop after turning Belgium international Timothy Castagne inside and out. The Fulham backline admitted they were caught off guard by the sheer power and unpredictability of the teenager and left-back Calvin Bassey later admitted he had rarely seen Fulham's right-back Castagne struggling so much in a Premier League match. By the end of the season, Ngumoha had firmly established himself as one of Liverpool's most exciting prospects. While there is still much to learn, his technical ability, fearlessness and maturity suggest he possesses the qualities required to become a significant first-team player in the years to come.
