  • - Gérard Houllier was forced to leave Anfield at half-time after experiencing severe chest pains during the interval. He was taken to Broadgreen hospital where it was discovered that he was suffering from a serious heart condition—an acute aortic dissection—which required immediate and life-saving surgery. The 11-hour operation, carried out that same night saved his life and marked the beginning of a lengthy recovery period.
