How Many Liverpool Players Have Lifted the World Cup?

Liverpool has had many players participate in the world cup in the past. However, most have never had the chance to hold the cup. Roger Hunt is the most notable player from Liverpool to have held the World Cup in the past. With Six team members from Liverpool playing in the 2022 World Cup, it may be time for a new member to grasp the trophy.

The 2022 World Cup

The 2022 World Cup sees six players from Liverpool across four teams. With four possible teams, it may be time for a third team member to lift up the cup. While the odds may be slim, there were always Best Premier League Bets, which may have helped you figure out if any of these players had a chance.

England

Henderson and Alexander-Arnold are the first two Liverpool members we’ll be discussing. The duo has been prominent in the matches, but Liverpool’s captain, Henderson, shone brightest for his nation during the last 16 matches. Henderson scored the opening goal against Senegal and was a spectacle to watch this season. Even in defeat, he showed excellent sportsmanship in congratulating France despite feeling that his team may have been able to win.

England progressed as far as the quarter-finals, where they lost 2 - 1 to France. Fortunately, these two aren’t Liverpool’s only hope of having a new member lift the World Cup in celebration.

Brazil

Alisson and Fabinho both play for Brazil in the 2022 World Cup. Unfortunately, Brazil lost during the quarter-finals, conceding the match to Croatia. While it may not be a victory for the Liverpool members, it was the third time Alisson represented his country in the World Cup, making for a great show of passion and skill as he let pass his first goal of the season during the team’s match against South Korea.

Netherlands

Van Dijk, a centre-back player for Liverpool, played in the quarter-finals against Argentina. While the teams drew initially, the Netherlands lost during the penalty kicks. Unfortunately, Van Dijk won’t be the Liverpool team member to raise the cup this year.

France

Konate, one of the Liverpool defenders, faced off against his own teammates in the quarter-finals. The team has made it through to the Semifinals and will play Morocco. Konate is the only of the six to make it this far into the cup and may be the next Liverpool player to lift the cup high in victory before the year comes to a close.

Roger Hunt

Part of England’s World Cup team in 1966, Roger Hunt was the first Liverpool team member to hold the World Cup. Hunt almost scored the final goal himself but turned away to celebrate the goal made by his teammate before the Russian Linesman properly awarded it. Hunt was the only player from Liverpool to hold the World Cup for a long time.

Fernando Torres

Torres played in the 2010 World Cup for Spain, the team making it to the finals and eventually winning the cup in South Africa. Torres entered the cup during a match against Sweden; 61 minutes into play, he came in as a substitute.

While not on the starting team for the final, he was a substitute at the 105-minute mark of the match. In this final, Spain beat Netherlands 1 - 0, making Torres the second Liverpool player on the World Cup-winning team.

More to Come?

The World Cup happens every four years, so if not in 2022, there’s still a chance for more Liverpool team members to raise the cup in victory at one of the following games.
