Playing bright, attractive football, Charlton took the lead after just three minutes; Hobbis' left-wing cross is missed by Stan Prior but Les Boulter is on hand to beat Hobson with a powerful rising shot. After this Charlton dominate the proceedings. Joe Jobling's fierce free-kick is just wide and Prior almost deceives Hobson with a swerving long-range effort. The Charlton players march off at half-time with appreciative applause ringing in their ears.

After the interval, though, they find Liverpool an entirely different proposition. Wingmen Nieuwenhuys and Hanson are menacing and Fred Howe produces a number of telling passes. It is centre-forward Howe who sets up a deserved equaliser after sustained pressure. His pass wrong-foots the defence and finds Hanson whose acute drive beats a startled Bartram. Charlton are now flagging noticeably and the departure of John Oakes, with a nasty eye injury, reduces them to ten men. Bartram makes a string of fine saves but Charlton almost sneak the win in a late rally which sees a Hobbis shot hit the bar and Hobson under pressure from a succession of corners.
