Opposition goal: Karl Heinz Thielen 72 mins

German referee Willi Thier sent off Emlyn Hughes in the 17th minute for retaliating after being kicked by Wolfgang Overath. Bill Shankly tried to send Geoff Strong on as a relacement for Hughes but once some Cologne players complained about the illegality of this attempt, Strong ... although stripped and ready to come on ... was not allowed to enter the field of play. Bizarrely, even though a Liverpool player had been dismissed, play restarted with a free-kick awarded to Liverpool for Overath's original challenge on Hughes.
