Player Profile
Right-back Josemi was the first buy of Rafael Benítez, signing form Malaga CF. He was a tough player who received on average a yellow card in every third game in Spain. He struggled to adapt to life in England after a promising start to his Liverpool career. His first season was ravaged by injury problems and poor form and Steve Finnan established himself in his absence. The Spaniard returned home with Villareal after one and a half season with the Reds, but one European champions' medal richer. Josemi only played one game as the Yellow Submarine finished second in La Liga in the 2007/08 season. He was transferred to Mallorca in the summer of 2008 where he played more regularly before signing a three-year contract with Iraklis Thessaloniki in Greece in August 2010. Josemi was relegated with Iraklis in 2011 and returned home, but suffered the same fate with Cartagena who were relegated to Spain's Third Division. He moved again to Greece in 2012, joining Levadiakos.
Josemi appeared in thirty first-team matches for Levediakos during the 2012/13 season. At the end of that single season, he signed a one-year contract with another Greek club, Skoda Xanthi. The defender appeared in seventeen league matches for Skoda plus two cup-ties in 2013/14. The club from Xanthi finished third from bottom (18th) with 38 points from 34 matches and that lowly finishing position meant that they would be involved in the relegation play-off that follows the regular season of home-and-away matches. In the summer of 2014, Josemi joined Atlético de Kolkata to play in the newly-formed Indian Super League alongside his old Liverpool teammate, Luis Garcia. Kolkata reached the final and Josemi was captain in that game for their 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters in Mumbai. Josemi renewed his contract to remain with them for the 2015 season, but when he was ruled out through injury after just three appearances his contract was cancelled in November. In the autumn of 2016, Josemi confirmed his retirement from playing. He has opened a sportswear shop in Malaga and is also a match delegate with his former club Malaga CF.
