Cissé's amazing recovery

Cisse has been out since 30th October 2004 after breaking his ankle in a 2-2 draw at Blackburn Rovers and many felt, including Benitez, he wouldn't play again this season.

Cisse said: "It has been a very difficult time for me, very difficult. So it is a wonderful feeling just to be on the pitch again, never mind being involved in the Champions League. It is hard to explain how I can be back so quickly. A lot of it happens in your head. But because of the support I have had I have always been able to remain positive.

"When they took me from the field what they did was so important for my career. My bones were overlapping and I had no circulation in my foot. They had to pull my bones back into place with their hands. If they had waited until I got to the hospital I might have lost my leg. After that, there was never a moment when I felt I wouldn't play again. No matter how bad it was, I always knew how much worse it could be.

"You know, what happened has put everything into perspective for me. I see things differently. What I know deep within me now is that I am so lucky to be able to do a job that is an absolute passion, and to be paid so incredibly well for it. I want to say that to all the football players in the world, all the professionals who think they are hard done to or have things to complain about. They all complain, you know, about things like having to run for 30 minutes or do something they don't fancy, and they moan. But that is ridiculous - we are so lucky and I really appreciate that now. I just wish all footballers could realise that.

"It is a job, sure, but it is a passion. Can you believe we get paid to do that? You see so many stupid things happening in football, and I just want to tell those guys how lucky they are. I'm not exaggerating to say that it is close to a miracle that I am playing again at this stage. It is miraculous and I count my blessing that I can be playing now in this game."

The club record signing has paid a massive tribute to the medical staff at Anfield, particularly Dr Mark Waller and the physios Dave Galley and Mark Browes.

Cisse said: "The reason for this miracle is down to the staff at Anfield. They have done a fantastic job helping me through this. I don't know hoe I can ever thank them for what they have done. The surgeon too, Mr Hutchinson, helped me so much and I have to thank him especially.

"I want to thank everyone by being a success here. I am ready to play against Juventus. I said to the manager 'I don't want to play just for my own pleasure, I want to be right for the team'.

"I feel I can be. It will be great to be part of the Champions League and maybe get to the final. I feel we can do that. The perfect end for me would be to play in the Champions League final. Who knows? Maybe I could score the winner. What a dream that would be."
