Top Moments in LFC History

Recently, Liverpool has proven that they’re more than a club with an incredible history. They are still adding trophies to the cabinet, setting records, and creating moments that will be remembered for a long time.

Although, as fans, we’d have always been the first to tell you that Liverpool are the best, it was still nice to have that officially declared. The Reds are England’s most successful team, and their wins both past and present have helped them earn that title.

It’s a challenge to pick out the best moment in LFC history. However, we managed to compile a list of highlights that make the club what it is today.

Founding of the Club

In 1892, businessman John Houlding found himself with an empty stadium. Everton left Anfield, and the future Lord Mayor of Liverpool’s response was to create a new team; in March 1892, they became Liverpool F.C.

The team saw some early success, but it was the 1900/01 season that saw Houlding vindicated. The club claimed its first league title. Many more would follow over the coming years, but the first win was an exciting sign of just how high the club could rise.

Bill Shankly

By 1959, Liverpool were in the second division with an average squad and lacking the structure to climb back up. That all changed when Bill Shankly took over as manager and put in the hard work that would help Liverpool find their true identity. He instilled principles around fitness, tactics and camaraderie, and most importantly, established a better relationship with the fans.

Shankly is known for creating the Boot Room, a crucial meeting place for him and his backroom staff to talk tactics and plan for success. The staff, like Bob Paisley, Ronnie Moran and Joe Fagan, took over the reins after Shankly, creating the vision and consistency that the club needed to develop.

Success in Europe

Under Paisley, Liverpool won their first European Cup, which was quickly followed by two more. Another trophy was added to the cabinet under Joe Fagan, who succeeded Paisley. It was a golden time in the club’s history, and there was a bit of a wait until European glory returned to Liverpool.

However, when it came, it was a memorable occasion, now referred to as the Miracle in Istanbul. The side were three goals down against a stellar AC Milan team but made an unbelievable comeback that demonstrated the absolute highs and lows of football.

Jurgen Klopp led Liverpool to European success once again in 2019. Leading to the sixth trophy, more than any other British team. If you think the club can beat its own record, you can check the odds here.

Reds at Anfield

A final few words on some key decisions in the club’s history are the kit choice and the ground. The decision to move to an intimidating all-red kit has made the team instantly recognisable today. Another critical choice was to redevelop Anfield instead of moving to a new ground. It’s where the fans and the team feel at home.
