A treble for Tosh
1975 - John Toshack scored a hat-trick as we beat Birmingham City 3-1 at Anfield, while Bob Hatton struck the last of his four goals past us.

Lawler’s night
1978 - A testimonial match for full-back Chris Lawler was staged with the reds defeating Swansea City 3-2 at Anfield, thanks to a Kenny Dalglish brace and a strike by Graeme Souness, with Welsh rugby union star Gareth Edwards featuring for the Swans. Managing Director Ian Ayre, then aged just fourteen, took a penalty at half-time, having won a competition. Lawler made 549 appearances in sixteen years at Anfield, scoring 61 times, and helping us to two League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield.

Fifty for Terry
1980 – Terry McDermott’s penalty was his fiftieth reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Ipswich Town, with Frans Thijssen netting for the visitors.

Double debut
1902 - Right-back Don McCallum played the first of his two reds games as we won 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with Sam Raybould bagging a brace and keeper Peter Platt also debuting.

Mixed fortunes against the Blues
1919 - Chelsea completed the first half of their first ever League double over us, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Inside-right Tom Bennett played his only official reds game, although he had struck an amazing 77 times in seventy wartime games.
1947 - More happily, Albert Stubbins, Bob Priday and Billy Liddell struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield in another First Division meeting.

Heading south
1956 – Centre-half Alex South left the reds to join Halifax Town, for whom he racked up over three hundred games. He had arrived from his hometown club Brighton & Hove Albion for a £5,000 fee, joining his old boss Don Welsh at Anfield. He struck once in just seven reds appearances.

Aldo for Ireland
1995 - Ex-red John Aldridge struck his final two goals for the Republic of Ireland, including a penalty, as they beat Latvia 2-0 in a Euro ’96 qualifier at Lansdowne Road. That took his tally to eight goals in four games against the men from the Baltic. Jason McAteer won his first cap as a reds player, with Phil Babb, Mark Kennedy and ex-red Steve Staunton also playing. Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp, ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal and future reds Nick Barmby, Stéphane Henchoz and Øyvind Leonhardsen all also featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland.

1989 - Aldo won his first cap as a Real Sociedad player in a 3-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Northern Ireland at the same venue. This was their first ever win over their near neighbours, at the fourth attempt. Ray Houghton and Ronnie Whelan both netted, while Steve Staunton and ex-red Kevin Sheedy also featured. Also in World Cup action that day were Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon, Steve Nicol and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, István Kozma, Colin Pascoe and Dean Saunders.

Ex-red Harry Wilson netted as Wales drew 2-2 with Iceland in a UEFA Nations League group game in Reykjavik, with Craig Bellamy managing the Welsh. Future red Hugo Ekitiké scored for France Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-0 in Cyprus. Virgil van Dijk was dismissed while skippering the Netherlands to a 1-1 draw with Hungary in the UEFA Nations League in Budapest, with Domink Szoboszlai captaining the home side. 2021 – Virgil van Dijk struck while captaining the Netherlands to a 6-0 thumping of Gibraltar in a World Cup qualifier in Rotterdam. Mohamed Salah also captained his country, with ex-red Rhian Brewster dismissed for England Under-21’s. 2017 – Rhian Brewster netted as England Under-17’s beat Mexico 3-2 in the World Championship Finals in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both featured as Brazil beat Chile 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier on the same day. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez bagged a brace as Uruguay beat Bolivia 4-2 in Montevideo.
2016 – Ex-red Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay were held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia in a World Cup qualifier, with Sebastián Coates also playing. 2014 – Ex-red Robbie Keane bagged a treble that included a penalty as the Republic of Ireland trounced Gibraltar 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin. 2013 – Daniel Sturridge earned and then converted a penalty as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Montenegro 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley, with Steven Gerrard captaining the side and future red James Milner also in action. Martin Škrtel put through his own net and was sent off while leading Slovakia to a 1-0 defeat in Greece. On the same day, ex-red Alberto Aquilani scored for Italy in their 2-2 qualifying draw with Denmark in Copenhagen, who were skippered by Daniel Agger, with ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić and future red Ragnar Klavan also playing for their countries.
1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer struck in the Czech Republic’s 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Slovakia in Prague. Ex-red Dean Saunders and future reds Stéphane Henchoz, Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and Rob Page all also featured in qualifiers on the same day.

2010 – Philippe Coutinho won his second and last cap while with Internazionale as Brazil beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly in Derby, with Lucas Leiva also in action.
2000 - Igor Bišcan won his eleventh cap, and final one as a Dinamo Zagreb player, in Croatia’s 1-1 draw with Scotland in his home city. Ex-red Don Hutchison also played. Flo on target at Clermont-Ferrand
2002 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored a penalty, the only goal of France Under-21’s meeting with Slovenia in a European Championships qualifier in Clermont-Ferrand. Alou Diarra and Anthony Le Tallec both also won their third caps. 2012 – Samed Yeşil converted a penalty for Germany Under-19’s in their 5-0 trouncing of FYR Macedonia in a European Championships qualifier in Luxembourg, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action at this level that day.
2018 – Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-21’s as they trounced Andorra 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Chesterfield. On the same day, Andy Robertson skippered Scotland as they lost a UEFA Nations League game 2-0 in Israel with Diogo Jota scoring his first goal for Portugal Under-21’s as they trounced Liechtenstein 9-0 in a qualifier in Vaduz. 2010 – Ex-reds reserves custodian Tony Warner rejoined Leeds United on a short-term deal, to play for their reserves.
