2023 – Argentinian midfielder Alexis Mac Allister signed from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported initial £35m. He struck nineteen times in 150 games across his first three reds campaigns, so far helping us to claim the League title and League Cup.
Happy birthday Javier
1984 - Javier Mascherano was born in San Lorenzo in Argentina. He signed for the reds on loan from West Ham United in January 2007, joining permanently thirteen months later. He turned out on 139 occasions, finding the back of the net just twice before moving to Barcelona for €22m in August 2010.
2005 - He appeared for his country on his 21st birthday, winning his fourteenth cap, and final one as a River Plate player, as they beat Brazil 3-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Buenos Aires.
2008 – He was sent off late on while captaining Argentina in their goalless friendly draw with the USA in the Giants Stadium in New Jersey, with future red Maxi Rodríguez also featuring. Meanwhile, future red Kolo Touré and ex-reds El-Hadji Diouf and Rigobert Song both featured in World Cup qualifiers.
In comes Cloughie
1993 - Nigel Clough signed from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000. He was far less successful than expected, scoring just nine times in his 44 reds appearances, despite a bright start of four goals in his first four games. His finest hour probably came when he struck twice to help us come from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Manchester United at Anfield in January 1994. He left Anfield for Manchester City in January 1996 for £1.5m.
Other ins and out
2000 - World Cup winner Bernard Diomède signed from Auxerre for £3m. He only made five reds appearances, before moving to AC Ajaccio, firstly on loan in January 2003 then permanently that summer.
2015 - Forward Danny Ings agreed to sign from Burnley on 1st July. He only struck four times in 25 games as he suffered two serious injuries, spending the next season on loan at Southampton before joining them permanently in July 2019.
1921 - John Miller joined Aberdeen for their club record fee, after just eight reds games since signing from Hamilton Academical in 1918. He struck 27 times in 42 outings in his first season before breaking his leg.
Syd born
1869 – Keeper Sydney Ross was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Cambuslang in June 1892, keeping eleven clean sheets in 21 outings as he helped us to claim the Lancashire League title before returning to his former club in 1893.
International debutants
2021 - Caoimhín Kelleher debuted for the Republic of Ireland as they were held to a goalless friendly draw in Hungary, with ex-red Ádám Bogdán winning his first cap as a Ferencváros player. On the same day, Roberto Firmino played for Brazil for the fiftieth time in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Paraguay. Sadio Mané scored from the spot as Senegal beat Cabo Verde 2-0 in a friendly in Thiès. Future red Luis Díaz and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi, Kai McKenzie-Lyle and Luis Suárez also played for their countries that day.
2003 – R.C.D. Espanyol’s Maxi Rodríguez struck on his debut for Argentina as they beat Japan 4-1 in a Kirin Cup game in Osaka. Another future reds winger Mark González made his senior international bow for Chile as a substitute in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Costa Rica on the same day, with future red Kolo Touré featuring in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
1999 - Sander Westerveld made his full international debut for the Netherlands, winning his only cap as a Vitesse Arnhem player as the Dutch lost 3-1 to Brazil in a friendly in Goiania, with future Bolo Zenden also in action and Jamie Carragher playing for England Under-21’s and ex-red Gareth Roberts skippering the Welsh at the same level.
1977 - Kevin Keegan won his first cap as a Hamburger SV player, skippering England as they shared a goalless draw with Brazil in a friendly in Rio de Janeiro. Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes, Ray Kennedy and Phil Neal all also featured.
In the World Cup
1958 – Keeper Tommy Younger captained Scotland as they drew 1-1 with Yugoslavia in a group game in Sweden.
1986 - Ex-red Graeme Souness won his 54th and final Scotland cap as skipper in their 2-1 defeat by West Germany in the Mexico World Cup Finals. Steve Nicol also featured, while Jan Mølby also appeared in the competition that day in Denmark’s 6-1 thrashing of Uruguay.
2017 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored his last two goals for England Under-20’s as they beat Italy 3-1 in their World Cup Semi-final in South Korea, with Sheyi Ojo and future red Freddie Woodman also in action. Ex-red Brad Smith played for Australia as they beat Saudi Arabia 3-2 in a World Cup qualifier in Sydney on the same day.
2015 – Ojo and future red Freddie Woodman played for England Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly win in Russia.

2005 - Vladimír Šmicer won his last cap as a reds player, and 74th to date, as the Czech Republic trounced Macedonia 6-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Teplice, with Milan Baroš grabbing his final goal as a red. Meanwhile, Jari Litmanen was playing his final international while with Hansa Rostock as Finland lost a qualifier 4-0 to the Netherlands in Helsinki, with Sami Hyypiä also in the side and future red Dirk Kuyt amongst the scorers and future reds coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst winning his fiftieth cap. Ragnar Klavan made his last appearance for Estonia while with Flora in their 1-0 defeat by Portugal in a World Cup qualifier in Tallinn. John Arne Riise skippered his country as they won a friendly 3-2 in Sweden, with Xabi Alonso, Carl Medjani, John Welsh and future reds John Heitinga, James Milner, Christian Poulsen, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin also turning out for their countries.
2013 – Torres again played for Spain, alongside former clubmate Pepe Reina in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Haiti in Miami. On the same day, Jordan Henderson captained England Under-21’s as they lost 3-1 to Norway in a European Championships Finals group game in Israel, with Jonjo Shelvey, Andre Wisdom and ex-red Tom Ince also featuring as future red Steven Caulker won his tenth and final cap at this level. Future reds Sadio Mané and Xherdan Shaqiri also played for their countries that day.
2025 – Diogo Jota played for Portugal for the 49th and final time as they beat Spain on penalties to win the UEFA Nations League Final in Munich after the game had ended 2-2 after extra time. On the same day, Florian Wirtz appeared for Germany for the last time before leaving Bayer 04 Leverkusen as they lost 2-0 to France in their 3rd Place Play-off in Stuttgart.
1997 - Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal won his 55th and final cap as Israel lost 2-0 to Russia in a World Cup qualifier in Moscow. Meanwhile, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Wimbledon player, and 52nd in total, alongside future clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye, as Norway drew 1-1 in Hungary in another World Cup qualifier.
1995 - Nick Barmby won his second full England cap, and last while with Tottenham Hotspur, as they drew 3-3 with Sweden in a friendly at Elland Road. John Barnes, John Scales and ex-red Peter Beardsley all also played.
1960 - Andy Beattie managed Scotland for the last of seventeen times as they lost 4-2 to Turkey in a friendly in Ankara. Beattie had guested with the reds during the war, later joining the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career.

2003 - Ex-reds striker Sean Dundee joined Austria Wien on a free transfer from VfB Stuttgart after 25 goals in 77 Bundesliga outings.
2004 - Christian Ziege also moved for free, joining Borussia Mönchengladbach from Tottenham Hotspur.
2010 – It was announced that ex-reds defender Jon Otsemobor would sign for Sheffield Wednesday from Southampton on 1st July of that year.
2011 – Former Academy full-back Calum Woods joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Dunfermline Athletic.
2012 - Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of West Bromwich Albion, guiding them to an eighth-place top-flight finish in his first season in charge, but was sacked in December 2013. On the same day, future reds midfielder Fabinho signed for Portuguese side Rio Ave.
2013 – Future reds Goalkeeper Development & Pathway Lead Colin Stewart signed for Airdrieonians. He played six times in his four months with the Diamonds.

2019 – Andy Robertson struck for Scotland while skippering them in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Cyprus at Hampden Park as they were managed for the first time by ex-reds coach Steve Clarke. 1996 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz faced an England side at Wembley that included Steve McManaman and future reds Nick Barmby and Paul Ince. This tournament opener ended 1-1.
1968 - Roger Hunt appeared as England clinched third place by beating the USSR 2-0 in Rome.

2004 – Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both featured as France Under-21’s beat Brazil 2-1 in the Semi-final of the Toulon Tournament.
