1st Division

Anfield | Saturday 8 September 1934 at 15:10 UK local time

Liverpool 0 - 1 Portsmouth

Notes

  • Daily Mail, 10 September 10 – 1934:
Liverpool introduced a novelty in English League football by playing four South Africans in their match in their match against Portsmouth – Arthur Riley (goal), and Berry Nieuwenhuys, Gordon Hodgson, and Lance Carr in the forwards. They are all big men. Arthur Riley is 6ft. 0½in. and weighs 12st. 10lb.; Berry Nieuwenhuys is 5ft. 11in. and 11st. 7lb.; Gordon Hodgson 6ft. and 13st. 8lb., and Lance Carr 5ft. 9in. and 11st. 11lb.
But Portsmouth won. Perhaps three Smiths cancel out four South Africans!
