Notes

  • - When Steven Gerrard was substituted, the captain's armband passed to Luis Suarez, who in turn passed it on to Martin Skrtel when he was substituted ten minutes later.

    - Steven Gerrard: "I’m trying to think of a performance I can remember in the last 15 years. Maybe one or two in the Champions League got close but that was as explosive as it gets. That is right up there. That’s definitely in the top three performances I have been involved in. You are talking about a side that is top of the league with world-class players, ones who are worth £42million. Jack Wilshere, one of the country’s big hopes. (Santi) Cazorla, a World Cup winner. We have absolutely demolished a top team from start to finish."

    - Brendan Rodgers: “We were brilliant. The performance level was absolutely out of this world. You don't get these games very often. But we know we can perform to that level. I decided to shift it about tactically. We played Sturridge through the middle to expose his speed, while Suarez, who always plays for the team, had a selfless role on the right wing. We put Raheem on the left to penetrate coming inside from the outside, and to control Sagna a bit. We had the appetite and hunger too, and that was important. I was also pleased how we managed the game. At 4-0 the crowd wanted us to go for the throat, but it’s important we managed the game.”

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta: "After 19 minutes we were 4-0 down and it was like a car crash. The manager was really upset at half-time, that's normal because it wasn't good enough for this football club. It was the angriest I have seen him."
