Notes

  • - Back in those days there was no homecoming for the players in between two successive away games as the Liverpool Mercury reported: "The form displayed by the Liverpudlians in their recent matches has been of exceptional merit, and fully warranted the success which has attended their efforts. After a narrow defeat by a solitary goal at Sunderland, they journeyed to Sheffield, and there extracted a point out of the hitherto unbeaten Leagueists. Although somewhat late in the day, the game was of such an excellent character as to demand attention, even at this period. It was a fitting finale to a splendidly arranged tour, which, commencing on the previous Friday, landed the players in Sunderland on the same evening, and a pleasant hour at the Variety Theatre, combined with a brisk canter to Roker the following morning, found the men in fine condition for the game in the far north.

After the match the team journeyed to York, were Sunday was spend in a most enjoyable manner by means of a beautiful drive of over 30 miles. On Monday Sheffield was reached, and, as if to show their appreciation of the committee’s generosity in providing such a successful outing, the team played one of their most brilliant games. It was a grand termination to an equally successful tour, and the officials who accompanied the team are deserving of the highest encomiums for their assiduous efforts to promote the comfort and well being of all who undertook the journey, which was simply an unqualified success throughout.
