  • - Liverpool's big win didn't exactly reflect the game. Liverpool Echo reported: "Clemence twisted, arched and defied gravity to keep out goals that Newcastle deserved.

    - Liverpool's second goal scored by Kevin Keegan was so described by Liverpool Echo: "With the litheness of a contortionist he twisted one way and another several times, with the ball bobbing between his feet, while Bobby Moncur hopped from one foot to another like someone jumping into the bath when the water is too hot, until he was knotted as adeptly as if a boy scout had roped him up."

    Ian St John remembers well the first game after the "This is Anfield" sign had been put up, that took place on 18 March 1972. “When the sign went up Liverpool were playing Newcastle. The Newcastle players are in the passage way and they see the sign. Malcolm Macdonald, "Supermac" is going: ‘Oh we’ve got the right ground, lads. This is Anfield.’ Shanks heard him. They get into dressing room, get stripped, go out and play. Liverpool won, it was 5-0. After the game boss goes in and knocks on their door. Joe Harvey says: ‘Yes, Bill.’ ‘Is Supermac there?’ They are sitting there, they had just been battered. Shanks then went: ‘You’ll know where it is next time.’”
    Shankly later said : “Malcolm Macdonald took it very well. He was quoted in the papers as saying how quickly I had replied to what he said before the game.”
