Newton Heath played with only ten men. Tthey struggled to raise a team as many of their regular players were required at court in Birmingham as they were suing the Birmingham Evening News for libel after the paper had accused them of brutal conduct and cowardice in a game against West Bromwich earlier in the season. They won the case but were only awarded a derisory one farthing in damages!

After the football game finished, the ground then staged a rugby union match between Liverpool and a combined Birkenhead/New Brighton team, which Liverpool won 13-6.
