Player Profile

Frimpong is a turbo-charged right-sided defender whose game is built around pace, power, and attacking intent. Though born in the Netherlands, Frimpong moved to England as a child and was raised in Manchester. Liverpool wanted him to join their academy as a child, however, growing up in Manchester, the distance to Liverpool proved to be a major obstacle. His family didn’t drive and Manchester City’s academy was just a short 15-minute bus ride away, making it a far more practical option. Frimpong joined City's academy at the age of nine and stayed for nearly a decade — though a senior appearance never came.

In September 2019, Frimpong made a permanent move to Celtic, where he wasted no time making an impression. Despite being just 18, He quickly broke into the first team and became a regular fixture in a side that secured a domestic treble. During his time in Glasgow, Frimpong made 51 appearances, scored three goals and provided eight assists across all competitions. His performances earned him the club’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2019/20 season.

A move to Bayer Leverkusen followed in January 2021 where Frimpong truly exploded onto the European scene, particularly after the appointment of Xabi Alonso as manager. Operating primarily as a wing-back in a high-intensity system, Frimpong became a nightmare for defenders with his overlapping runs and end product. Over four and a half seasons in Germany, he racked up 30 goals and 40 assists in 190 appearances, including standout contributions in the Champions League and Europa League. He was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title win in the 2023/24 season and also lifted the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup.

In June 2025, Liverpool signed Frimpong for £29.5 million, making him the first signing of the newly crowned league champions. Leverkusen's X account bid him a fond farewell which showed his popularity:

You arrived with a smile, and you never stopped sharing it.
Your joy, energy and heart lit up every room, training session and matchday.
We will miss your laugh, your dance moves and your hugs, but most of all, we will miss the incredible person behind the player.
Thank you for every moment in black and red.
Now it’s time for the next step. You’ll always have a home here.
With love and pride,
🖤❤️

Frimpong scored on his Community Shield debut against Crystal Palace at Wembley. However a hamstring injury sustained in the opening Premier League game would rule him out until after the first international break.
