Player Profile

Haigh was a Yorkshireman who signed for Liverpool in October 1949 when he was 21-years-old having only been on the books of Midland league side, Gainsborough Trinity, for three months. Haigh made a Boxing Day debut in 1950 as an inside-right when Blackpool visited Anfield for a first division fixture. He scored in the next match in a 2-1 victory at Derby County playing alongside luminaries such as Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer and Albert Stubbins. Following a 2-0 defeat to Everton he lost his place but returned two months later to score twice in five games. Don Welsh had now taken over from George Kay, who had to retire due to poor health, and evidently Welsh and Haigh didn't see eye to eye. Haigh made three further appearances towards the end of the 1951/52 season without adding to his goals total and was transferred to Scunthorpe in Third Division North before the start of the following season.

Haigh is remembered as one of Scunthorpe's finest players, playing 364 games and scoring 72 goals from 1952-1960. He was nicknamed the "Iron Man” after a brave performance in the 3-1 FA Cup fourth round win over Newcastle United on 25 January 1958. He was knocked out during the match as well as being injured twice more, but refused to give in and even managed to score a goal.
