Bryan Williams

Born in Liverpool, Bryan Williams joined Liverpool from local amateur club South Liverpool in March 1944 and turned professional in August 1945. He initially had to be patient for his first-team opportunity, making his senior debut against Birmingham City at Anfield on 12 March 1949. Williams was a versatile player who could operate in several defensive and half-back positions. His game was characterised by determined tackling, excellent stamina and a powerful long throw. He was also an excellent swimmer and sprinter. Williams initially featured mainly at right half and had made six senior appearances in that position before the 1950/51 season.

His lack of regular first-team opportunities became frustrating and, in early 1951, Williams asked to be placed on the transfer list. However, the appointment of Don Welsh as Liverpool manager provided him with another opportunity to establish himself. In April 1951, Welsh selected Williams at right-back for the league match against Arsenal at Highbury, allowing the new manager to assess him against strong opposition. The Liverpool Echo noted that Jimmy McInnes, who was in charge of the A team, had played an important role in restoring Williams' confidence through his coaching. The opportunity led to a greater involvement with the first team. Williams made 13 appearances during the 1951/52 season and another 12 in 1952/53, taking his Liverpool total to 34 appearances in all competitions. He showed his versatility playing mostly as an outside right or an inside-left during his final two seasons. He scored five goals, including four during the 1952/53 campaign.

Williams' final Liverpool appearance came in a 3-1 defeat away to Manchester United on 20 April 1953. He left Anfield during the summer and returned to South Liverpool on a free transfer. Williams subsequently moved into Football League football with Crewe Alexandra, joining the Cheshire club in 1954. He became an established player with Crewe before later continuing his career with Rhyl.
