Player profile

George Longmore Paterson played three times as a left-winger for Liverpool during the last full season before the outbreak of World War II. Prior to Anfield he featured for the works team of Hall Russell & Company Limited which was the last of the Aberdeen shipbuilders. He had already featured in two amateur internationals for Scotland as well as representing Aberdeenshire. Paterson made his Reds debut in a home fixture against Stoke between Christmas and New Year 1938 and his second and last League appearance came in the 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa on 18 February 1939. Paterson also figured once in the FA Cup and scored Liverpool's second goal in their 3-0 third round victory over Luton Town at Anfield on 7 January 1939. Paterson later joined Shankly's coaching staff at Liverpool.
