Kelly played three games in the Lancashire league for Liverpool in the 1892/93 season. Towards the end of the season, he was attacked by two of the opposing team resulting in a leg injury which ended his brief playing career. However, he maintained an active interest in football, working as a trainer for various amateur teams. He made a career of scouting talented players and also had his hands full with 13 children!
