Thomas Clark Fisher Johnson was a Manchester City legend, whose record of scoring 38 goals in 39 first division games in the 1928/29 season still stands. Johnson scored 158 League goals for City, a club record shared with all-time leading scorer Eric Brook. After 11 years at City 29-year-old Johnson was sold to Everton who subsequently won the Second Division. His departure sparked protests by City fans, resulting in a drop of 7,000 in the club's attendances. He contributed 22 goals in 41 matches, linking well with Dixie Dean, as Everton won the League Championship in 1931/32. He played when the Blues won the FA Cup in 1933, ironically beating Manchester City 3-0 in the final. A tricky player on the left wing Johnson played 159 games, and scored 64 goals for Everton before switching to Liverpool at 32 years of age. Everton were very angry at the time how a document sent only inside football circles, offering Johnson along with seven other players to clubs, was made official, prompting their Chairman, William C Cuff, to complain that "unless there is confidence in football, clubs wouldn't anymore send out lists naming players they wanted to sell."

Johnson played in the last 11 matches of the 1933/34 season and scored twice, a period in which six games were won and only three lost. This contrasted greatly with the previous, depressing run of 17 games before Johnson was picked for the first team when only one match resulted in maximum points so his introduction made a significant difference to the club's fortunes at a crucial stage of the season. Johnson played in nearly half the League games a year later as Liverpool finished in a much more respectable position, seventh, but the longest run of successive games he had was the last ten matches of the season. The Manchester City and Everton great had seen the back of his best days when he arrived at Liverpool but his fantastic experience paid off handsomely when the Reds avoided the dreaded drop.
