Player Profile

Harston was a late bloomer who joined Liverpool in 1937 after scoring no less than 81 goals in 70 games for Mansfield in Third Division North. Amazingly he scored 55 out of Mansfield's total of 91 in the 1936/37 season! Harston only played for Liverpool on five occasions during the first half of the 1937/38 season. He scored after only 13 minutes of his debut at Chelsea on the opening day of the season but Liverpool were thrashed 6-1. He then scored twice in the next game when Portsmouth visited Anfield but lost his place in the side to Fred Howe after four matches had been played of the campaign. Harston's only other appearance for the first eleven came when he replaced Howe at Blackpool towards the end of November 1937, a fixture the visitors won 1-0. Harston unfortunately broke his leg in the 1938/39 season which effectively finished his professional career. He joined amateurs Shorts Football Club in the Kent League in August 1939. Harston was so described in 1936: "Speed belies his sturdy build, and apart from his deadly shooting, can work the ball well and feed his wings."
