Liverpool-born Dickson signed professional forms for his hometown club in June 1952 when he was 18 years old but the England youth international had to wait four years for first-team opportunities. Dickson made his debut on the right wing, but played as an inside-right and left, scoring four goals in six games in the 1955/56 season. He only featured for the reserves in his last two seasons before his contract expired in 1958 and he joined Headington United who changed their name to Oxford United in 1960. Dickson was top-scorer at  Oxford in the 1958/59 season with 27 goals.
