John Chadburn

Chadburn was described as a real character in the dressing room and on the training ground, although his volatile temper could get the better of him on the pitch. He established his reputation at West Bromwich Albion, helping the club recover immediately from relegation from the First Division in 1900/01. Albion won the Second Division title in 1901/02 and finished seventh in the top flight in his final season. Chadburn played both at right-back and on the right wing, making 48 appearances and scoring four goals for the Baggies before joining Liverpool in May 1903. Liverpool's contemporary season preview in Athletic News on 24 August 1903 listed Chadburn among three candidates for the right-back position, alongside Joe Hare, signed from Southampton, and John McLean of Vale of Leven. The competition for the position was therefore evident before the season had even begun.

Chadburn made his Liverpool debut away to Nottingham Forest on 5 September 1903. Liverpool lost 2–1. He retained his place for the following match against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield on 12 September, but Liverpool suffered another defeat, this time 3–1. Jack Cox had given the home side an early lead before Wednesday's forwards turned the game around. Those were Chadburn's only two first-team appearances for Liverpool. The club endured a miserable opening to the 1903/04 campaign, losing its first five league matches, and manager Tom Watson repeatedly changed his team in search of a winning combination. Four different players occupied the right-back position during the opening ten league fixtures. Alfred West became the fifth when he was selected against Notts County on 7 November and held the position for the remainder of the season. Liverpool's poor start ultimately culminated in relegation from the First Division. Chadburn did not feature again for the first team and left the club in March 1904,
