Player Profile

Carney was a University graduate, taught history and was headmaster of Chadderton Grammar School in Oldham. Liverpool-born Carney, who featured in 33 games and scored 15 goals for Liverpool during wartime, was 31 years old when he made his proper debut at Sheffield United on the opening day of the first full season following World War II. "Len Carney, fair-haired schoolmaster, crashes into big-time football," the press reported. Carney scored the game's only goal in the very last minute with a "gliding header". His heroics saved the day for Liverpool who went on to win their fifth first division championship. Carney kept his place in the starting line-up in the game following his scoring debut but that turned out to be his only appearances during this historic season. Carney was awarded the “Distinguished Service Order” for his bravery during the war in Italy.
