George Bowen

Bowen gave Liverpool supporters an encouraging glimpse of his ability before injury effectively ended his Anfield career. A quick and skilful right-winger, he joined the newly crowned League champions from Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1901, alongside his teammate George Fleming. Liverpool already knew the danger he could pose: on 3 November 1900, Bowen had scored both Wolves goals in their 2–1 victory over the Reds at Molineux. His association with Anfield had begun even earlier. Bowen made his Wolves first-team debut there in a 1–1 draw on 25 November 1899, shortly after stepping up from local football with Bridgtown Amateurs. He scored twice against Blackburn Rovers on his first appearance at Molineux the following week and went on to register 13 goals in 48 league matches during his first spell with Wolves.

Bowen’s Liverpool debut came before approximately 30,000 spectators in the Anfield derby on 14 September 1901. Within the opening minutes, he chased a pass from Alex Raisbeck, advanced down the right and crossed for fellow debutant William White to score. The match finished 2–2, with Sam Raybould scoring Liverpool’s equaliser after Everton had recovered to lead. The enthusiasm extended beyond that opening goal. Writing in the Athletic News on 16 September, “Tityrus” admired the speed and ball control of Bowen and his inside-right partner Andy McGuigan, suggesting that they could develop into one of the season’s outstanding right-wing combinations. It was a promising assessment of a partnership that would scarcely have another opportunity to flourish.

Bowen retained his place for the visit to Sunderland on 21 September, but suffered a serious knee injury in the 1–1 draw at Roker Park. He never played another league match for Liverpool. Contemporary reports chart a prolonged and frustrating recovery: in February 1902, the Nottingham Evening Post reported that he was again receiving treatment from specialists in Manchester and was unlikely to play again that season. There was renewed optimism during the following summer. The Sheffield Daily Telegraph reported on 28 August 1902 that leading surgeons had been consulted and that a return to the forward line appeared likely. The attempted comeback failed. Bowen appeared in Liverpool’s reserve line-ups against Manchester United on 1 September and Blackburn Rovers five days later, but broke down again at Blackburn.

Bowen returned to Wolves on 17 September 1902. He recovered sufficiently to make three further league appearances for Wolves, scoring once, before joining Burslem Port Vale in August 1904. Once again, he made an immediate impression, scoring on his debut in a 2–2 draw with Manchester United on 3 September. He managed only six Second Division appearances, however, and was released at the end of the season. He subsequently worked in a Bilston factory while continuing to play outside the Football League. His Liverpool record remained two appearances and no goals, a meagre return that concealed the promise of his derby debut.
