Player Profile

Piechnik blossomed in Denmark's victorious Euro 1992 squad, showing considerable man-marking skills against some of the best forwards in the world. Souness could have been forgiven for thinking the Dane was a quality defender. Piechnik was tormented by Liverpool old boy Dean Saunders on his debut as Deano put two past Liverpool. Piechnik made only one appearance the following season, embarrassingly taken off at half-time after Newcastle had run Liverpool ragged to race into a 3-0 lead.

Piechnik's compatriot, Jan Mølby, told LFChistory.net why he failed at Liverpool. "Torben’s biggest problem was he didn’t want to listen. He had his own idea how he wanted to play and how he thought Liverpool should play," Mølby said. "It became a problem with the manager telling him how he wanted him to play and Torben not wanting to play that way. He defended by dropping off, whereas Liverpool squeezed up, pressurized the opposition. It was only a matter of time before they were going to send him back to Denmark."

After five years with Aarhus, where he wont the Danish Cup, Piechnik left the game and went into real estate as well as setting up as a masseur.
