Liverpudlian inside-forward Banks scored ten goals for the reserves in March and April 1958 after arriving at Liverpool as an amateur. He signed professional forms in May and made his debut for Liverpool a few days short of his twentieth birthday against Brighton at Anfield in September 1958. It was a dream debut too as he scored Liverpool's third goal in a convincing 5-0 victory. But established players like Alan A'Court and Jimmy Harrower were the main reason why he made only another two appearances that season, scoring one more goal. Despite scoring four times in five matches and 21 for the reserves in the 1960/61 season, he never played first-team football for the club again. Banks never experienced playing in the top-flight with Liverpool but was a talisman for Exeter City, scoring 109 goals in 285 games in two spells having signed from Cambridge City in October 1963. He left Exeter one season for second division Plymouth Argyle but soon returned to his beloved Exeter. In a PFA survey published in December 2007, he was voted as Exeter's all-time favourite player, said to have been an entertainer on the field.
