Player Profile

When Florian Wirtz broke into the Bayer Leverkusen first team at just 17 years old, he was already being whispered about in the same breath as German footballing royalty. A native of Pulheim, near Cologne, Wirtz was nurtured at 1. FC Köln's youth academy before Leverkusen made a decisive move in January 2020, securing his services amid growing excitement over his talent.

Replacing Kai Havertz in the creative engine room was no small task, but Wirtz never looked overawed. In May 2020, he became Leverkusen’s youngest-ever Bundesliga debutant at 17 years and 15 days versus Werder Bremen on 18 May 2020, a record that has since been surpassed, though he remains one of the youngest goalscorers in league history.

A technically gifted attacking midfielder with a low centre of gravity and remarkable close control, Wirtz glides past defenders in an elegant fashion. His vision, spatial awareness, and knack for timing a killer pass made him central to Leverkusen's attacking play. Though capable in tight spaces, he’s equally dangerous in transition—able to turn defence into attack with a single touch or turn.

Wirtz’s intelligence on the pitch belies his age. He frequently drifts into half-spaces, linking up with forwards and often arriving late in the box to finish moves himself. After recovering from a cruciate ligament injury that kept him sidelined for much of 2022, Wirtz returned stronger, sharper, and even more decisive. His resilience only added to the growing belief that he could become one of Germany’s defining players of the next generation. In the 2023/24 season, Wirtz was a linchpin in Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side, which famously went unbeaten domestically on their way to a historic Bundesliga title—Germany’s equivalent of Arsenal’s ‘Invincibles’.

Wirtz was chosen the Bundesliga Players' Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in 2024/25. In the summer of 2025, this unique talent declined Bayern München and Manchester City for his preferred destination Liverpool after Arne Slot had impressed him with his ideas for the playmaker in his team of champions. Liverpool reached a landmark agreement to sign Wirtz for a club and British transfer record. The initial fee is set at £100 million, with performance-based add-ons potentially taking the total to £116.5 million. This surpasses the £115 million Chelsea paid for Moisés Caicedo, which previously stood as the most expensive transfer in British football history. Wirtz was unveiled by Liverpool on 20 June 2025.
