This testimonial match in recognition of Keith Kennedy's 10 seasons at Bury. It was a festive occasion, with Liverpool entering into the spirit of the occasion. Hey began with a strong eleven & at half time the score stood at 2:2. Térry McDermott had crossed for David Johnson's Liverpool opener in the 22nd minute. Craig Johnston fired home a second soon after then up stepped Jahn Murray to pull one back for Kennedy's Bury Select XI, Keith then got an opening after good work from Murray & Spence to fire hame an equaliser in the 38th minute. In the second with scores level both team re emerged with a number of changes; the main pone of which was the swapping of sides of Keith Kennedy who now played alongside brother Alan. It was Bury who took the lead on 55 through Spence & they went 4:2 up on the hour when sub Mellwraith scored with his first touch of the ball after replacing Reid. Incredibly 3 minutes later Whitehead made it five, before Liverpool began a revival. Paul Hilton hit home for Liverpool on 70, Ogrizovic scored 2 minutes later & then Bury reclaimed a 2 goal cushion through Chandler. McLwraith made it 7 to Bury with 10 minutes to go; then enter centre stage Keith Kennedy. From the kick off after that goal Keith Kennedy fired the ball in from the half way line. Just a minute later, Keith had dribbled through the defence to score past Grobbelaar making it 7:6; setting up a tense finish. On 84 mins Terry McDermott set David Johnson for an equaliser 7 then in the 88th minute, Craig Madden finish off a passing move, by scoring the winning making it 8:7 to Liverpaol. Alan's change of side at half time, saw him realise a dream he had held to play for Liverpool. Grobbelaar in goal was a feature of the game with an ‘eccentric’, performance; with the fans responding to his antics. At the end of the game, Keith received tremendous applause despite the poor weather on a very memorable night.
