Harold Barton

A forward who made 12 appearances by the end of his debut season when Liverpool finished a disappointing twelfth. Although he was overlooked for the first dozen or so fixtures the following season, Barton was a regular in the side from November 1930 onwards. The 1932/33 season was his most productive as he scored 13 from 36 matches, including a hat-trick when Liverpool crushed League Champions Everton 7-4 at Anfield on 11 February 1933. The eleven goals scored in that game is easily the highest aggregate ever scored in a Merseyside derby. 

Barton left Liverpool for Sheffield United in 1934, shortly after the Blades had been relegated to the Second Division. He became a regular at Bramall Lane and spent the remainder of his peacetime career with the club. A highlight came in 1935/36, when Barton helped United reach the FA Cup final. Playing at outside-right against Arsenal at Wembley, he created one of United's best chances when his cross was struck against the crossbar by Jock Dodds. Arsenal eventually won 1–0. Barton remained an important member of the side and helped Sheffield United win promotion back to the First Division in 1938/39. The outbreak of the Second World War then interrupted his career and prevented him from enjoying a full season back in the top flight. He finished his United career with 47 goals in 203 competitive appearances.
