Player Profile
Grujic went through Red Star Belgrade's youth system and made his debut as a 17-year-old against Vojvodina Novi Sad in May 2013. He did not feature in 2013/14 and in 2014/15 but his development continued with a loan spell at second level Kolubara. After being given a new three year contract in the summer of 2015 he broke into the side and was part of the Red Star team that went on a nineteen game winning run, his ball control and ability to get from box to box quickly being a key factor. In January 2016 with many other clubs watching the situation Liverpool made a move, paying £5.1million. He was then loaned back to Red Star for the rest of the season. Grujic made his international debut for Serbia in May 2016 and on his first appearance for the Reds, in a friendly at Fleetwood on 13th July, he scored in a 5-0 win. after pre season promise, he had to be content with substitute appearances and League cup starts when the season began. Then he was out four months with a hamstring injury. After regaining match fitness with the under 23's he returned to the matchday squad but his appearances in the closing stages of the season totalled ten minutes across three matches.
In the first half of 2017/18 Grujic again struggled for game time, starting just in a League cup defeat at Leicester. He made five other substitute appearances totalling twenty minutes and on 17 January 2018 joined Championship side Cardiff City on loan for the remainder of the season. Grujic helped Cardiff to promotion to the Premier League, scoring once in thirteen appearances. It earned him a call up to Serbia's World Cup squad but he did not get onto the pitch at all in Russia.
Grujic joined Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan in August 2018. He impressed in the Bundesliga with five goals in 22 appearances, only injuries and suspension accounting for the games he didn't feature. Grujic spent another season at Hertha and added 29 appearances to his total and four goals in the Bundesliga. Grujic appeared in two League Cup ties early in 2020/21 but was then loaned out to Porto for the 2020/21 campaign. After 23 league appearances and eight in the Champions League, the deal was made permanent in July 2021 with Liverpool receiving a fee of £10.5 million and a 10% sell on clause.
