A physically strong central defender who was born in Cameroon but has a German passport and has played for Germany's youth teams. He joined the Reds from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2009 before the German club could secure him on a professional contract. Sama featured for the first team in the 2011 and 2012 pre-season and made the bench in the third round of the League Cup against West Bromwich Albion on 26 September 2012. He was also on the bench when Liverpool played Anzhi in Moscow in the Europa League early in November 2012. But at the end of the 2012/13 season he was still waiting to make his first-team debut in a competitive match.
Sama appeared in eight Under-21 matches for Liverpool in the 2013/14 season but was released and joined the reserve side of German side VFB Stuttgart, who play in the regional 3 Liga. In the summer of 2016 he was promoted to the main Stuttgart set up, after their relegation to Bundesliga 2. After four appearances Sama joined Greuther Fürth in Bundesliga 2 in January 2017 where he was sent off in his debut. He was then frustrated by a series of injuries which included dental problems. He spent the second half of 2017-18 on loan at Bundesliga 3 Osnabruck, but was back in top flight football for 2018/19 with Heracles in the Dutch Eredivisie. After just eight appearances in his first season, Sama spent the whole of 2019/20 with the reserve squad. In September 2020 he agreed a two year deal with Accrington Stanley.
