Liverpool's Youth Academy: Success Stories And Future Prospects

Liverpool FC has been the birthplace for many youngsters seeking to make their trade in the Premier League. This is a trend that has been evident since Jurgen Klopp took over the reins at Anfield back in 2015.

He continues to be the inspirational manager under whom a myriad of success stories develop with youngsters at the club. One only needs to look at the current squad to see how fruitful the journey from the young categories to the first team can be for kids at the club.

So, here, we will take a look at some of the best success stories coming straight from the Anfield club’s academy and future potential prospects.

History Repeating Itself

Even though Jurgen Klopp is the man in charge of overseeing the development of young stars at Anfield, it doesn’t mean he started the trend of giving young guns the chance to flourish.

If you take a little trip back in time, you will see that just some of the players who have made a successful transition from the academy to the first team are Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, and Steve McManaman, just to name a few! Not a bad company, we reckon!

Of course, Steven Gerrard is considered to be Mr. Liverpool himself, having scored 186 goals and provided 157 assists in 710 games, before eventually leaving Anfield to join Los Angeles in 2015. 

Jamie Carragher spent his entire career at Liverpool, having been at the club since 1996, all the way to 2013 when he hung up his boots.

Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Steve McManaman had shorter stints at Anfield, but still went on to have great success elsewhere. 

Fowler joined Manchester City, but he eventually made an emotional return to Liverpool in 2006, while Owen and McManaman joined the mighty Real Madrid in 2004 and 1999, respectively.

Honourable mentions here would go to the likes of Jay Spearing, Raheem Sterling, Martin Kelly, Rhian Brewster, as well as Stephen Warnock. All of them have had mixed success stories, with arguably the most prominent name being Sterling, who left Liverpool to join Manchester City, and then made a transfer to Chelsea in 2022.

Current Young Stars

In this current campaign, Liverpool has nine academy graduates in their squad, all of whom have combined more than 400 matches – and counting! This is the most of any club in the Premier League at the moment, which is simply astonishing.

The Reds’ list of players consists of the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Conor Bradley, Stefan Bajcetic, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, and Bobby Clark, just to name a few. 

Of course, Trent, Elliott, and Curtis Jones are the standout names, having won the lot with the club in the past few years. They surely serve as a nice inspiration to the rest of the youngsters in the squad at the moment, knowing that Klopp is not afraid to give them a chance – if they deserve it.

Many youngsters from the local town and abroad dream of playing for Liverpool. But making it to the club's youth academy isn't easy. 
The competition is fierce, as this is one of the best clubs in the world, which attracts many wonder kids. As such, we've decided to reveal the main ways for a top youngster to get into Liverpool's youth academy.

Scouting

Liverpool employs numerous scouts who look for talented players all around the world. They constantly find and bring new youngsters for trials at the club. But if they notice some extraordinary footballers with big potential, then they might suggest the directors sign them.

Either way, for a player to get into Liverpool’s youth academy through scouting, they must first draw some attention. If the scouts are following multiple matches of the same team, then players have more chances to prove themselves. But, if it's a one-time show, then some youngsters might fail to show off their skills.

It's worth noting that Liverpool's scouts focus mainly on home-grown players. According to the FA rules, clubs are able to recruit youngsters who are 12 or older from all over the UK. Developing English home-grown footballers is crucial as every team must register at least 8 such individuals.

Data Analysts

All other players must play at least one match during the trial fixtures. Here, only those who perform at the highest level will get to enter the academy squad.

Those who don't get in shouldn't demotivate themselves. Liverpool organizes multiple such trials over the year. Underperforming once doesn't mean they'll fail all the time.
