Player Notes: Former England captain Blenkinsop was almost 32 years of age when he joined Liverpool from Sheffield Wednesday where he had played 424 games from 1923-1934 and won the League Championship two years in succession in 1929 and 1930. Blenkinsop started out as an inside left, but was early on converted to left-back. His positional play was said to have been impeccable and his delivery accurate.
Blenkinsop was at Anfield for 5 seasons, but in only one of those, 1935-36, could he be considered a regular in the side, a season in which he missed only 5 league matches. He played in the first 7 matches of the 1936-37 season, before losing his place to Benjamin Dabbs. Ernie's 71st and final league appearance for the Reds came in a home match against Charlton Athletic on 4th of September 1937. |
