Player Notes: A skilful midfield player born in Liverpool, but as with many born in this area he had Irish roots and therefore qualified to represent the Republic of Ireland. He was released by Everton when he was 15, but their loss was Liverpool's gain. Potter's first-team opportunities at Anfield were limited but he did play a part in 17 matches between 2004 and 2006. He had a short loan spell at Southampton towards the end of the 2005-06 season and impressed when he went out on loan again, this time to Wolverhampton Wanderers, the following season. This successful loan spell led to the player becoming a permanent member of the staff at Wolverhampton in January, 2007.
By the end of the 2006-07 season Potter had made frequent appearances for the Wolves first team, to which he added a further 23 appearances (including 8 as a substitute) the following season. It was reported that Wolves manager Mick McCarthy gave the young midfielder the option of going out on loan in January, 2008 so that he could get regular first-team football somewhere else. However, Potter reputedly turned down that option and decided to stay at Molineux and fight to get his place back in the team. Despite that show of determination and loyalty, Wolves decided to put him on the transfer-list at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season. He remained at Wolves until January 2009 when he sent on loan to Championship's Sheffield Wednesday and he impressed enough there for the Owls sign him in the summer.
Darrern was an ever-present for Wednesday in 2009-10, appearing in all 49 of the club's competitive fixtures (46 League, 2 League cup and 1 F.A. cup). Unfortunately for Potter and his team-mates, a 2-2 home draw with Crystal Palace on the final day of the Championship season was not enough to prevent their relegation to the third tier of English football. |
