Player Notes: One of Czech Republic's brightest stars. He was a success in France with Lens after leaving his native country. Vladi was unlucky with injuries at Liverpool, inconsistency being the keyword of his career at Liverpool. Even though he regularily outshined everybody at the training ground he didn't show off his talents at a regular rate in competitive matches. Smicer ended his Liverpool career in style in the Champions League final vs. Milan by scoring Liverpool's second goal and in the penalty shoot-out after coming on as a substitute. Truly the nicest fellow you could ever meet, but that doesn't count on the field. He also struggled with injuries at Bordeaux and returned to his first club, Slavia Prague, in the Czech Republic in the summer of 2007.
In November 2009 Vladimir Smicer announced his retirement as a player at the age of 36 so that he could take up a post he had been offered to work with his national team as its Head Coach. He said ... as do many players of his age ... "My heart wants to play on, but the body will not have it."
