Player Notes: One of the most talented players in Liverpool's history. He fought a hard battle with his weight, but his vision, immense skill and sublime passing and shooting ability more than made up for his lack of mobility. When Souness left Liverpool, Mølby was invited for a ten day trial at Anfield. In his first match he scored a magical goal and Fagan decided there and then he was worth the gamble. He was a regular in his first season until when he had to make way for Kevin MacDonald halfway through the season. Jan Mølby was Liverpool's best player in the double season. 21 goals in 58 matches and a man of the match performance in the FA cup final against Everton.
He started the following season well enough, but faded during the second half by his own admission. 1987/88 turned to be a disaster. Injuries curtailed his progress and limited his appearances to coming on as a mere substitute. During this time he had a lot of time on his hands and an unsavoury drink-driving incident resulted in him being put behind bars for 6 weeks the following season. He had been a regular while waiting for his trial as a central defender and given a fair chance again when he got out again, before getting injured once more. His career took off again in 1990/91 and two whole seasons as a regular were ahead. His lack of fitness didn't allow him to survive the top flight's competitive edge any further than 1993 and in 1996 he was released.
