Player Notes: Hysen's first proferssional club was IFK Gothenburg, with whom he won the UEFA cup in 1982 and 1987. Shortly after that second success, he moved to Fiorentina in Italy and it was from there that Liverpool stole him right from under the nose of Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. By the time of his arrival on Merseyside, Hysen had been captain of the Swedish national team for many years and had been voted one of the 10 best players in Europe when France Football announced their Golden Ball winner in 1987.
Hysen was "Man of the Match" on his Liverpool debut in the 1989 Charity shield against Arsenal at Wembley. He had an excellent first season and was an important member of the championship-winning squad of 1989-1990. However his cool and calculated performances seemed to evaporate the following season but even so he made a further 32 appearances in the First Division. When Graeme Souness replaced Kenny Dalglish in the spring of 1991, it was clear that the Scot and the Swede did not see eye to eye. Souness picked Hysen only 5 times from the start in 1991-92 with two further appearances coming as a substitute.
In 1992 Glenn returned to Sweden and signed for IFK's city rivals GAIS and played on for another two seasons before announcing his retirement at the relatively young age of 34. One of Sweden's most well-known and respected sportsmen, he represented his national team 68 times, scoring 7 goals. In club football, he made nearely 400 league appearances for the two Gothenburg clubs, PSV Eindhoven, Fiorentina and Liverpool. Glenn's father and an uncle had both played professionally for IFK Gothenburg. Another generation on, Glenn's son Tobias also signed for IFK after earlier being with three Swedish clubs as well as a short spell in England with Sunderland. |
