Player Notes:
Shankly bought Furnell when trying to secure promotion to the 1st division. Bert Slater had been dropped and Furnell played the last 13 games of the season. He was first-choice when Liverpool had been promoted but he broke his finger 13 games into the season. 13 being an unlucky number for him, clearly. Tommy Lawrence replaced him and stayed in goal for years, thus enabling Shankly to sell Furnell to Arsenal. Furnell played 167 games for 1st Division Gunners from 1963-1968, 76 league games for 3rd Division Rotherham, before joining 3rd Division Plymouth in 1970, where he spent the rest of his career. He was voted Plymouth's player of the year in his first season and had played 206 games for the Pilgrims when he retired in 1976. Furnell took care of Blackburn's reserves and youth team development from 1981-1998. In 2007 he was named Plymouth's best all-time keeper.
