Player Notes: Diouf started out at Sochaux in 1998 and then moved to Rennes a year later. His stay was short there as well and Lens was his next destination. After 18 goals in 54 league games for Lens and almost winning the title in his final season he accepted Houllier's offer, choosing him instead of Nicolas Anelka. Diouf was voted the Best African player for two years in a row. He is a legend in his homeland and the brightest star of the Senegalese team. He has got incredible potiental, as described by Houllier; "What has warmed him to everyone is his workrate. It is astonishing. For a right midfield player he tracks back and attacks. He chases back and he harries and tackles and the fans have really warmed to him."
Diouf possesses good skill on the ball and is unpredictable, often getting himself in trouble when his enthusiasm gets the better of him. He failed to score regularly enough for Liverpool and the spitting incident vs. Celtic signalled the beginning of the end for Diouf at Anfield (there were two similar incidents after he had departed from Liverpool). He joined Bolton on loan in 2004-2005, quickly scored 9 League goals for them and that led to the player joining Bolton permanently in the summer of 2005. He spent three successful years at The Reebok before joining Roy Keane's Sunderland in the summer of 2008. Diouf scored no goals in 16 games for Sunderland before joining Blackburn in mid season for 2 million pounds where he finally made to score a solitary goal in 15 appearances in his debut season. |
