Player Notes:
Clough was said to be a footballer created for Liverpool. He was even dubbed the 'new Kenny Dalglish' and wore the hallowed number 7. He made one of the best debuts in LFC's history, scoring two goals on the opening day of the season vs. Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield. He struggled to make an impact with subdued performances for the remainder of the season, on occasion shining like against Manchester United when he was instrumental in turning a 0-3 loss into a 3-3 draw with two great goals. He was mainly used as a substitute the following season and halfway through the 1995/96 season he was offloaded to Manchester City.

Clough played in all of City's remaining Premier League matches in the 1995-96 season following his transfer from Liverpool. But City were relegated and injury meant that he lost his place in the team at the start of the following season. He was sent out on loan to both Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday. At the end of the 1997-98 season City were relegated again and Clough was given a free transfer, effectively ending his senior playing career at the age of 32.

In October 1998 Clough accepted the post of player-manager at Burton Albion, then in the Premier Division of the Southern League. Burton then moved into the Northern Premier League and, as champions of that division in 2002, were promoted to the Conference. Seven years later they won the Conference title and so became a Football League club for the first time. However, by the time promotion had been achieved, Nigel Clough had replaced Paul Jewell as the manager of Derby County. Derby's results improved after his arrival and the club was able to stave off the threat of relegation. In 2009-10 Derby finished the Championship season in 14th place with 56 points from 46 matches.
