Cheyrou came with good credentials, but he struggled to make an impression at Liverpool. Cheyrou seemed a little boy lost in English Premiership football. It came as no surprise when he was loaned out to Marseille and then Bordeaux with the prospect of making it a permanent transfer. Neither team was sufficently impressed, but Rennes took the plunge and signed Cheyrou.
As things turned out, Rennes seemed to be the right club at the right time for the Frenchman who failed to make an impact in England. Being hailed as "the new Zidane" by the man who had brought him to English football became a burden rather than an asset. His record at Lille, prior to arriving at Anfield in the summer of 2002, had been excellent. By the end of the 2007-08 season, he had made nearly as many League appearances for Rennes as he did for Liverpool, Marseille and Bordeaux combined.
He won his first senior cap for France shortly after arriving on Merseyside and has been 'capped' twice more since then. At Rennes he seems to be playing in a more defensive role than he did earlier in his career. But at Liverpool he will only be remembered for the unfortunate tag his manager gave him, along with the excellent goal that brought a rare League victory at Stamford Bridge and his two goals against Newcastle in the F.A. cup later that same month that got him voted the best player of the 4th round.
After playing with Marseille in the 2004/5 saeson and Bordeaux in 2005/6 Cheyrou has become a firm fixture in Rennes's first-team as a holding midfielder.
