Player Notes:
The Italian left-back's performances for Udinese impressed Rafa Benítez so when John Arne Riise departed for Rome, Dossena arrived as his replacement from Udine. Dossena claimed to be an English style rugged defender who takes no prisoners and also a powerful attacker. He started his professional career at Verona, but was relegated to Serie B. He continued his progress and caught the eye of Udinese in Serie A. After gaining some valuable experience on loan at Treviso in the 2005/6 season in Serie B, he returned to Udinese where he excelled earning a call up to the Italian international team.
Dossena looked woefully out of sorts in his debut season with Liverpool but confessed to struggling playing further upfield for Liverpool than he was used to in Italy. He did impress in attack when he came on as sub vs Manchester United and Real Madrid and added Liverpool's fourth on each occasion. Dossena was linked with a move to Juventus and Napoli in the summer of 2009 but stayed to fight for his place at Liverpool. However, after making only 3 starts for Liverpool's first-team in the first half of the 2009-2010 season, it came as no surprise when the defender moved to Napoli on a four-year deal in the January transfer window to improve his chances of making Italy's World Cup squad.
Dossena must have been looking to put his brief experience of English football behind him after he returned to his homeland. However, he only played in four Serie A matches and 1 Coppa Italia match between making his Napoli debut on the 17th of January 2010 and the end of the season in May.
