Player Notes: A promising left back who was brought initially on an 18 month loan from Boca Juniors from 11th of January 2007. Since Gabriel Paletta moved to Boca Juniors Liverpool made Insúa's transfer a permanent one in August 2007. He started two league matches (t Portsmouth and Fulham towards the end of the 2006-07 season and a year later he was picked to play in the final three league matches. Following an impressive half-hour substituting for John Arne Riise at Birmingham, he was picked from the start for the final two matches of the campaign against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. His reward was a new 3-year contract which would tie him to the club until June, 2011.
Insúa continued to impress in the 2008-9 season, making 11 starts and was in Liverpool's starting line-up in the 2-1 defeat vs Spurs in the first game of the 2009-10 season. He made his international debut for Argentina in a dramatic world cup qualifier vs Peru on 10th October 2009 which Argentina won in the 93rd minute keeping their World Cup hopes on track.
Many supporters expected 2009-2010 to be the big breakthrough season for the young Argentinian. It was in terms of competitive matches played (forty-four) because that number was more than twice what he had achieved as a total over the previous three seasons. In fact Insúa played some part in 31 of the first 33 Premier League matches up to and including Birmingham away on the 4th of April when he tore quadriceps in his thigh and missed the rest of the season.
Liverpool and Fiorentina agreed a fee believed to be £5 million on 17th July 2010 and Insúa was negoating personal terms with the Viola club. However, early in August the Italian club's sporting director revealed that the deal had fallen through because they had been unable to agree personal terms with the Argentinian. On the final day of August 2010 it was announced that Insúa had joined Turkish club Galatasaray on loan for the rest of the 2010-11 season. At the end of the loan-period, there would then be an option for the Istanbul club to make the deal permanent. |
