Southampton 1 - 0 Liverpool

Notes

  • This was the match after which Bill Shankly came out with his notorious comment about "Alehouse Football". Southampton centre-half John McGrath somehow managed to tackle Alun Evans around the neck with his legs ... and the Liverpool forward had to be taken off the field and played no further part in the match. For a few years afterwards, whenever Southampton visited Anfield, they were greeted with the Kop bawling "Alehouse, Alehouse" at them every time they committed a foul!
