Match details

2nd Division

Ayresome Park | 07 October 1961 at 15:00 UK local time

Middlesbrough 2 - 0 Liverpool

Opposition goals

  • Dick White O/G 49
  • Dick White O/G 64

Notes

  • - Alf Arrowsmith makes his LFC debut
  • - Ron Yeats was unable to play because he had not fully recovered from the badly-bruised shoulder he had sustained in the match against Newcastle seven days earlier. His replacement at centre-half, Dick White, scored two own-goals!

Ian St. John was also unavailable because he was representing Scotland in a British Championship match against Northern Ireland in Belfast. Scotland won 6-1 but the Saint was not one of the scorers. His place at Ayresome Park was taken by Alf Arrowsmith, who was making his debut for Liverpool's first team. Arrowsmith had two goals disallowed for offside, both at a time when Middlesbrough led 1-0.
