Player Profile

Michael Stensgaard was a Danish goalkeeper who joined Liverpool in the summer of 1994 from Hvidovre IF. At the time of his arrival, he was viewed as a long-term prospect, having already attracted attention in Denmark for his performances at youth level. His time at Anfield, however, never developed as hoped. Shortly after signing, Stensgaard suffered a serious shoulder injury while taking out his ironing board at his home which proved difficult to resolve. The issue restricted his ability to train and compete, and despite ongoing attempts to recover fitness, he was unable to push into first-team contention. The injury ultimately brought his playing career to an early end, with Stensgaard retiring in 1996 at the tender age of 22. "Basically one of the muscles in my shoulder are dead," Stensgaard told the press.

Stensgaard made a remarkable comeback wth FC Copenhagen and his appearances attracted the interest of Southampton where he stayed for six months in 1999 without making an appearance before returning to Copenhagen.
