Player Profile
Maxwell is born in St. Asaph, the same town as Ian Rush and probably dreamt of a great Liverpool career. He scored an excellent goal on his debut for Liverpool in the League Cup against Hull which confirmed participation in the third round. "I scored and you really think you've made it when that happens," said Maxwell. "Not many players score at the Kop End on their Liverpool debut. It was some night after that game, but I soon came back down to earth because I was training with the reserves the following week." After roughly a year without first-team action the Welsh winger was loaned to Stockport County for a season when the Edgeley Park club finished bottom in what was then the First Division. Maxwell admitted his future at Liverpool was bleak. "There were a couple of times last season when I travelled with the first-team squad and thought to myself 'If he gets injured and if he gets injured I might have a chance'. But then the manager goes and buys someone for £8 million and the others come back to fitness and you're back down the pecking order. The trouble is I like to play in a central role using my pace to come off defenders, but there's someone else at Liverpool who already does that - Owen. That's the competition I've got."
Cardiff City took Maxwell to his home country but he struggled at the club and his contract was ended by mutual consent midway through the 2003/04 season. He played a few games for Swansea on a non-contract basis, not doing enough to seal a permanent deal, but enough to disgust his former fans at Cardiff! Maxwell had a brief spell with Mansfield and then went part time, playing for a number of clubs in the Welsh leagues and training as a telecommunications engineer. He worked for Vodafone and briefly managed Cardiff Draconians in the Welsh third tier, stepping down due to work commitments in December 2021. In October 2022 he was jailed for 8 years after being convicted of conspiracy to supply crack cocaine, having allowed drug dealers to use his home as a 'safe house' paying him £500 per month.
